I. Overview of Chips

The INA301A3IDGKR is a high-precision current detection amplifier and belongs to the INA301 series of Texas Instruments

This device is designed to precisely measure small differential voltages within a wide input common-mode voltage range.

Its main features include low offset, high gain accuracy and excellent temperature stability, making it highly suitable for current monitoring

applications in industrial, automotive and communication systems.

II. Chip Characteristics

1.Wide input common-mode voltage range: Supports a common-mode voltage range from -4V to 80V, suitable for current detection in various power supply voltage environments.

2. Fixed gain: It features a fixed 50-fold gain, capable of amplifying tiny differential signals into output voltages that are easy to handle.

3. Low input offset voltage: The typical value is 25μV, ensuring high-precision current measurement.

4. High bandwidth: With a bandwidth as high as 430kHz, it is suitable for dynamic current monitoring scenarios.

5. Protection Functions: Built-in overvoltage protection and reverse battery protection enhance system reliability.

6. Package form: It adopts SOT-23-5 package, which is compact in size and convenient for PCB layout design.

III. Precise Current Detection

(1) Working Principle

The INA301A3IDGKR measures current by detecting the voltage drop across the shunt resistor. A shunt resistor is connected in series in a circuit.

When current passes through it, a voltage drop proportional to the current will be generated on the resistor. The high-precision amplifier of INA301A3IDGKR

amplifies and outputs this voltage drop, thereby achieving precise measurement of the current.

(2) Select the appropriate shunt resistor

Selecting the appropriate shunt resistor is the key to achieving precise current detection. The resistance value of the shunt resistor should be selected based on

the expected maximum current and the requirements of the measuring equipment. The lower the resistance value, the smaller the voltage drop, but at the same time,

it will also reduce the amplitude of the measured signal. Generally speaking, the resistance value range of shunt resistors is between 100μΩ and several hundred mΩ.

For instance, if the maximum current is 50A and the maximum voltage drop across the shunt resistor is desired to be 50mV, the resistance value of the shunt resistor

should be: Rshunt =Imax Vshunt =50A50mV =1mΩ

(3) Consider the rated power of the shunt resistor

The rated power of the shunt resistor must be higher than its actual power consumption at the maximum current to prevent the resistor from overheating or even burning out.

The power calculation formula is: P=I ² × R. For the above example, the maximum power is: P=(50A) ² ×1mΩ=2.5W. Therefore, a shunt resistor with a rated power of at least 2.5W should be selected.

III. Efficient overcurrent protection

(I) Overcurrent comparator

The INA301A3IDGKR is equipped with a high-speed overcurrent comparator, which can quickly detect overcurrent events and output a logical signal.

Precise overcurrent protection can be achieved by setting the threshold voltage of the comparator. When the detected current exceeds the set threshold,

the comparator output signal can be used to trigger protection mechanisms, such as turning off the power or issuing an alarm.

(II) Response Speed

The overcurrent comparator of INA301A3IDGKR has an extremely fast response speed and can detect overcurrent events and output logical signals in a short time.

This rapid response capability is crucial for applications that require quick protection, such as motor drives and power management. Rapid response can effectively prevent

equipment damage caused by overcurrent and enhance the reliability and security of the system.

IV. Low offset voltage and high precision

(I) Low input offset voltage

The INA301A3IDGKR features a low input offset voltage characteristic, which helps to enhance the accuracy of measurements. Low offset voltage means that the measurement error

is smaller when detecting at low current. For instance, when detecting small currents, a low offset voltage can significantly reduce measurement errors and enhance the overall accuracy of the system.

(II) High-precision measurement

To achieve high-precision measurement, shunt resistors with low resistance values, low temperature coefficient (TCR), and high precision should be selected. For instance, the use of metal foil resistors

or manganese-copper alloy resistors can significantly reduce the impact of temperature changes on measurement accuracy. Meanwhile, ensure that the resistance value and power of the shunt resistor

meet the design requirements to avoid measurement errors caused by overheating of the resistor.

V. Practical Application Cases

(I) Motor drive

In motor drive applications, the INA301A3IDGKR can precisely monitor the motor current to ensure that the motor operates within a safe range. By setting an overcurrent protection threshold,

the power supply can be quickly cut off when the motor is overloaded, protecting the motor from damage.

(II) Power Management

In the power management system, the INA301A3IDGKR can monitor the output current of the power supply in real time to ensure that the power supply operates within a safe range.

Through precise current detection and rapid overcurrent protection, power overload and short circuit can be effectively prevented, enhancing the reliability and safety of the system.

(III) Battery Management System

In the battery management system, the INA301A3IDGKR can precisely monitor the charging and discharging current of the battery to ensure that the battery operates within a safe range.

Through precise current detection and rapid overcurrent protection, overcharging and overdischarging of the battery can be effectively prevented, thereby extending the battery life.

VI. Summary

The INA301A3IDGKR, with its precise current detection capability and efficient overcurrent protection mechanism, has become an ideal choice for numerous applications.

By choosing the appropriate shunt resistor, high-precision current measurement and reliable overcurrent protection can be achieved. Its low input offset voltage and fast response

characteristics make it perform well in various application scenarios, providing outstanding performance and reliability whether it is motor drive, power management or battery management systems.

With the continuous development of electronic technology, the INA301A3IDGKR will continue to play a significant role in the field of current detection and protection, providing solid support for modern electronic systems.
