2.1What is the insulation resistance meter

An insulation resistance meter, also known as a megohmmeter or shake meter, is a specialized electronic instrument designed to measure the insulation performance of electrical equipment and components. Its primary function is to assess the ability of insulating materials to prevent current leakage, thereby helping identify potential safety hazards such as insulation aging or damage. It is widely used in electrical engineering, electronics manufacturing, and equipment maintenance due to its high accuracy and reliability.

 


2.2Working principle

The core working principle of an insulation resistance meter relies on Ohm's Law (Resistance = Voltage / Current). The instrument is equipped with an internal DC high-voltage power supply (with common output voltages including 500V, 1000V, and 2500V). When in use, it applies a specified DC high voltage to the measured object. Subsequently, it detects the tiny leakage current flowing through the insulating material of the object. Finally, it calculates and displays the corresponding insulation resistance value. A higher insulation resistance value indicates better insulation performance of the measured object, while an abnormally low value suggests potential insulation defects.

 

2.3Component

The main components of an insulation resistance meter include four key parts. Firstly, the internal DC high-voltage power supply, which generates the required high voltage to test the insulation performance. Secondly, the current detection circuit, responsible for accurately measuring the minute leakage current passing through the insulating material. Thirdly, the display unit, which can be either an analog pointer or a digital screen, used to show the measured insulation resistance value. Lastly, the connection terminals, typically including L (line terminal), E (earth terminal), and G (guard terminal), which are used to connect the instrument to the measured object for signal transmission.

 

Ⅲ.How to use

Preparation:Ensure the measured equipment is powered off and discharged, especially for high-voltage equipment,to avoid residual charges affecting measurement results or causing safety risks.Check the instrument's condition, including verifying if the pointer or digital display is zero, confirming the test leads are intact, and ensuring the battery has sufficient power.

Wiring:For regular measurements, connect the L terminal to the conductive part of the measured component and the E terminal to its housing or grounding part. The G terminal is used to eliminate surface leakage interference.

Measurement Operation:For a hand-cranked megohmmeter, crank the handle at a constant speed (usually 120 revolutions per minute) and read the value when the pointer stabilizes.For an electronic megohmmeter, turn on the power, select the appropriate voltage range based on the rated voltage of the measured equipment, press the test button, and read the value when the display stabilizes.

Completion and Recording:After measurement, first disconnect the test leads, then turn off the power or stop cranking the handle. Record the measured value and compare it with the insulation resistance standards of the equipment to determine if it is qualified.

 



Ⅳ.Application in electronic components

Semiconductor Components:Detect the insulation resistance between pins and between pins and the housing of diodes,triodes, MOSFETs, etc.Poor insulation may lead to breakdown or leakage, affecting component performance.

Capacitor Components:Test the insulation between pins and the housing,and between internal electrodes of electrolytic capacitors,ceramic capacitors,film capacitors, etc.Insufficient insulation causes excessive leakage current,leading to capacitor heating and capacity attenuation.

Inductors and Transformers (Small Electronic Types):Check the insulation resistance between coils,and between coils and iron cores (or skeletons).Insulation defects can result in leakage,electromagnetic interference,or short circuits.

Connectors and Connectors:Measure the insulation between different pins and between pins and the housing of circuit board connectors,terminal blocks,etc.Poor insulation causes signal crosstalk and leakage,affecting signal transmission accuracy.

Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs):Detect the insulation resistance between different copper foil circuits and between circuits and the substrate.Low insulation resistance leads to leakage and signal interference, especially in high-density wiring boards.
